What is Solid State Disk and why should I consider it?
Solid State Disk (SSD) is a storage media that is comprised of two main technologies, RAM (random access memory) and Flash. The most important differentiator of SSD compared to other storage media (ie, HDD and Tape) is the lack of moving parts. This feature alone enables SSD to be inherently faster than HDD. Faster data access in conjunction with the small physical footprint, lower energy costs, and drastically decreasing component cost, SSD (Flash specifically) can help you achieve the performance you need, with the capacity requirements you have in a fraction of the space you are currently using. SUN's F5100 1U SAS attached FLASH SSD

- ECC is the only layer of protection. There is no RAID on the F5100

- Only certified to work with SUN servers, max 16 servers

- Can only be direct-attached.

- Does not currently support multipathing, making the SAS HBA's a single a point of failure.

- SAS is the only connectivity option limiting the distance between server and storage to only 3 meters

- There is no shared storage pool - each server connected to the F5100 only has access to a specific LUN.

The RamSan-620 holds up to 5TB of storage in a 2U rack space, and uses SLC as the primary storage medium. The RamSan-620 uses Flash memory boards as the storage medium. Each board has 320GB of Flash with 240GB of usable space. The extra capacity is used for RAID parity and write provisioning. The RamSan-620 is attached to the hosts via Fibre Channel, and can be attached directly or through a Storage Area Network (SAN). This allows multiple RamSan-620s to be used together, and systems can be added as performance and storage demands increase. The RamSan-620 offers greater capacity than the F5100. The RamSan-620 also offers better scaling options because multiple RamSan-620's can be used together in order to offer more performance and capacity than a single unit can provide. The only limit on how many RamSan-620 can be used together is the number of available ports available in the SAN. The F5100 can not be cascaded and the direct-only connection ability limits how the F5100 can be scaled.

Additionally, the RamSan-620 does not lock the customer into one manufacturer. The F5100 is only compatible with SUN Solaris servers and SUN Sparc servers. The RamSan-620 is compatible with all x86 hardware, and every major open operating system. The RamSan-620 is compatible with Sparc servers as well. The RamSan-620 is compatible with Fibre Channel switches from all major vendors as well as the HBA's and HCA's. The RS-620 can be accessed by any server in a SAN environment, and is limited only by the distance limitations of Fibre Channel.

2. Run a Virus Scan [ McAffee / Norton etc ] once a week
3. Run Spybot Search and Destroy every two weeks.
4. Run a Defrag once a month minimum
